I have a Samsung. Can I still use one?
No, and we would rather say so now than refund you later. The Homing Tag registers on the Apple Find My network, which needs an iPhone or iPad on iOS 14.5 or later, signed in to iCloud. There is no Android app and no workaround. If the tag is a gift, check which phone they carry first.
You are a .com, where do you actually post to?
The United Kingdom, and nowhere else. The domain ends in .com but the shop, the stock and the returns address are all in the UK, delivery is free to any UK address with no minimum spend, and checkout will not take an overseas delivery address. If you are reading this from abroad, this is the wrong shop for you and we would rather you found that out here than at the payment screen.
Is there a catch? What does it cost me after I have bought it?
Nothing. There is no companion app, no account to create, no trial that turns into a subscription and no monthly fee. Locating your things through the Apple Find My network is free and is Apple’s to run, not ours. The only thing you will ever spend again is a couple of pounds on a coin cell, roughly every two years.
How is this so much cheaper than an AirTag?
Because it is not an AirTag, and we are not Apple. It carries an MFi certified chip that lets it join the same Apple Find My network, so the finding works the same way, but it skips the Ultra Wideband hardware that drives AirTag’s precise on-screen arrow, and it comes from a shop with no retail estate to pay for. You get a map, a left-behind alert and a loud speaker, you do not get the arrow.
What happens when the thing I have lost is still in the house?
This is the case the tag is best at. Open Find My, tap the item, tap Play Sound, and it goes off at 80–100 dB from up to 60 m / 200 ft away. That is loud enough to hear through a sofa, a coat, a laundry pile or a closed drawer, and it is how most people find most things.
And when it is not in the house, say it is in a taxi across town?
Then Bluetooth is out of reach and the Apple Find My network takes over. Any passing Apple device quietly reports the tag’s position back to your Apple Account, so the map keeps updating without the driver knowing, without you contacting them, and without either of you installing anything. It works anywhere Apple devices are common, which in the UK is essentially everywhere.
How tough is it? I am not gentle with my things.
It is rated IP67, which means dust-tight and sealed against rain, spilled drinks and a short dip in water. It is 36.3 × 36.3 × 9 mm and about 10 g, so it survives being sat on, dropped and dragged through a rucksack. It is not armour: a car tyre or a washing machine cycle will still finish it.
What is a CR2032, and is there a spare one in the box?
A CR2032 is the flat coin cell that runs kitchen scales and car key fobs, every supermarket and pharmacy sells them for a couple of pounds. One is already fitted in each tag and lasts up to 2 years. There are no spares in the box: you get 2 Homing Tag trackers, 2 key rings and a no-nonsense manual, and that is the whole list.
Could somebody slip one of these into my bag to follow me around?
Apple has built the defence for that into the network itself, and these tags are covered by it: if an unknown tag travels with you for a while, your iPhone warns you and can make the tag play a sound so you can find it. Location data is end-to-end encrypted through Apple Find My as well, so only the owner’s Apple Account can read it, not us, and not the manufacturer.
