Tile Life360: what the merger means for Tile owners
If you own a Tile and you have noticed the branding drifting, you are not imagining it: Tile Life360 is now a single product line rather than two companies. Life360 has absorbed the tracker brand it bought years ago, moved the item-finding into its own app and pointed the old web address at its own. Here is what that has changed for people with a Tile on their keys, and what it means if you are shopping for a tracker now.
What happened, and when
Life360, the family location-sharing app, agreed to buy Tile in November 2021 in a deal worth 205 million dollars. At the time the two ran as separate products, with Tile keeping its own app, its own brand and its own chief executive.
The merge came later. On 28 May 2025 Life360 announced that Tile's item-finding features had been built into the main Life360 app: you can now set up a Tile, see it on the same map as your family members, and get left-behind notifications, all without opening the Tile app. TechCrunch, reporting the announcement, noted that Life360 had also redirected tile.com to life360.com just ahead of the update, and that the company had 83.7 million monthly active users at the time.
Asked whether the standalone app was going away, the company was non-committal:
The Tile app is not being retired at this time.
That was over a year ago and the standalone app is still there. But "at this time" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and the direction of travel has not been subtle. By the second quarter of 2026 Life360 was reporting more than 100 million monthly active users, and when the company launched a licensed Mickey and Minnie Mouse tracker range with Disney in July 2026, the products were badged as Life360 Tile.
What has changed for existing Tile owners
Your hardware still works. Nothing has been bricked. Tiles bought years ago still ring, still report and still show up.
The app you are steered towards is different. Life360 is a family-safety app first. It is built around sharing the live location of people, partners, children, elderly parents, and the trackers now sit inside that frame. If all you wanted was a beeper for your keys, you are being invited into a substantially larger product with a substantially larger appetite for permissions.
The subscription ladder is Life360's. Location history sits behind tiers: a couple of days free, up to a month on paid plans. Features that once lived in Tile's own pricing now sit in Life360's.
The finding network is bigger, but it is still an app network. This is the part worth understanding properly. Tile's crowd-finding has always depended on other people having installed the app. Folding it into Life360 grew that pool considerably, and 100 million monthly users is not nothing. But an app network only listens where someone has chosen to install and run the app, which is why coverage thins out in rural areas, quiet industrial estates and anywhere off the commuter grid.
What Tile Life360 still does better than anyone
Credit where it is due: Tile works on iPhone and Android, from one app, with one account. If your household is genuinely split between platforms and everybody wants to see the same set of tagged items on the same screen, no tag tied to Apple Find My can offer that, and that is a real advantage rather than a marketing one.
The 2024 hardware refresh also added an SOS button, which sends an alert to your contacts from the tag itself. Nobody else's coin-shaped tracker does that.
What to weigh up if you are buying now
Ask yourself one question before anything else: which phone is in your pocket?
If the answer is Android, or a mix of Android and iPhone across a family who all want the same view, Tile is a reasonable answer and the Life360 integration makes it a tidier one.
If the answer is iPhone, the calculation changes completely, because you already belong to a much denser finding network and you did not have to install anything to join it. Apple Find My is built into every Apple device in the country. It listens passively, it needs no app, and it relays encrypted locations without the finder ever knowing. For a tag left in a taxi or a train seat in the UK, that pool of listeners is simply larger than any app-based network can be.
The second question is what happens when the battery dies. Several Tile models are sealed units. Check before you buy, because a sealed tracker is a two or three year purchase, not a keep-forever one.
How Homing Tag compares
Ours goes the other way from Tile on almost every axis, deliberately. There is no app of our own and no account to open: the tag registers as an Other Item inside Apple Find My, shows up beside your AirPods, and is picked up by the passive Apple crowd rather than by anybody's installed software. Nothing of ours sits between you and the map, so there is no tier of location history to buy back.
The specification is intentionally unexciting. Around 100 dB at full volume, sixty metres of direct link, IP67 against weather, and a CR2032 that costs a couple of pounds and lasts a couple of years. Left-behind alerts, Lost Mode, item sharing from iOS 17 and Apple's unwanted-tracking warnings are all supported.
There is no SOS button and no Ultra Wideband arrow. Nor is there Android support of any kind: an iPhone or iPad on iOS 14.5 upward is required, which is exactly why Tile remains the sensible answer for some households and not others. A box holds two tags, costs under £15 and ships free in the UK.
If you are on iPhone and Life360's direction is not for you, the two-pack is here.
